From empty equipment rooms to a fully operational digital air traffic control facility — a complete turnkey ATC system integration delivered to ICAO standards, with every subsystem installed, integrated, tested, and signed off before a single controller sat down to work
Air Traffic Control facilities sit at the apex of aviation safety infrastructure. Every system in an ATC environment must perform without failure, without ambiguity, and without delay — because the consequences of failure in an ATC context are measured not in inconvenience, but in lives. The responsibility that comes with delivering a digital ATC system integration is one that Imperial East Africa approaches with the highest level of engineering rigour and regulatory discipline.
This project required Imperial East Africa to design, procure, supply, install, integrate, test, commission, and train operational staff on a complete digital ATC facility — encompassing communication systems, controller working positions, voice switching infrastructure, recording systems, and all associated power and data distribution. Every phase was executed under a structured project management framework, with formal acceptance testing at each milestone before progression to the next.
Challenge
Digital ATC system integrations are technically complex at every layer. Unlike single-system deployments, an ATC facility integration requires simultaneous delivery of multiple interdependent systems — each of which must meet strict technical standards individually, and then perform correctly as an integrated whole. A communication system that works perfectly in isolation may introduce interference issues when integrated with co-located navigation aids. A voice switching system may reveal configuration requirements that are only apparent when connected to real controller workstations under simulated operational conditions.
Managing these interdependencies, maintaining integration integrity across all subsystems, and delivering the entire facility to a single unified commissioning standard requires project engineering experience that goes well beyond standard ICT or electrical installation.
