GSM-Railway (GSM-R) Communications Networks
GSM-R is the international standard for railway radio communications, derived from the commercial GSM standard but purpose-engineered for the demanding requirements of rail operations.
Service Overview
GSM-R is the international standard for railway radio communications, derived from the commercial GSM standard but purpose-engineered for the demanding requirements of rail operations. It enables voice communication between train drivers and controllers, supports automatic train operation, and forms the bearer for the European Train Control System (ETCS). Imperial East Africa designs, supplies, and deploys complete GSM-R networks using Nokia’s proven EIRENE-certified infrastructure.
Scope of Services:
GSM-R Network Design & Planning
End-to-end network planning encompassing radio frequency planning, base station placement, coverage modelling, and capacity analysis for the full route — including tunnels, cuttings, viaducts, and station environments.
Base Station Deployment
Supply, installation, and commissioning of Nokia Flexi EDGE and Nokia Flexi Multiradio 10 base stations along the track — purpose-designed for linear railway coverage with the leakage cable and directional antenna solutions required for full in-tunnel coverage.
Geo-Redundant Core Network (NCES)
Nokia Core Enterprise Solutions — a geo-redundant R4 core and Intelligent Network (IN) platform that provides carrier-grade reliability, disaster recovery, and the functional addressing architecture required for railway operations.
Functional & Location-Based Addressing
GSM-R's railway-specific addressing system enabling calls to the nearest locomotive controller, maintenance gang, or specific train — regardless of physical location on the network.
Group Call & Emergency Call Systems
Railway-specific calling features including simultaneous broadcast to groups of drivers, emergency override calls with absolute priority, and shunting radio operations.
ETCS Level 2 Integration
Integration of the GSM-R network with European Train Control System Level 2 — enabling moving block train control and cab signaling over the GSM-R bearer.
Operational Maintenance Terminals (OMT)
Local maintenance interfaces at base station sites enabling field engineer access for fault diagnosis and configuration.
Network Management — NetAct
Nokia NetAct network management platform providing centralised performance monitoring, fault management, configuration management, and reporting across the entire GSM-R network.
